Grommet oil leak: Exhaust pipe removal

So I have found the source of my dribble oil leak. The lower grommet on Stator cover is leaking and running down under case. I have removed all of the
plastic and seat pan. But I do not have a lift and at my age laying on garage floor is not easy. It looks to be a big pita to get those four nuts off or more of one to get back on easily. I have removed muffler previously but pipes ouch.
Has anyone built a wooden work stand. And how high from floor.

I really do not want to take to Honda. unless last resort.

Once you’ve drained the oil, you can leave the bike on the side stand while you take the pipes off. I did this lying on the floor, really not too hard to do. I used 1/4 drive 10mm socket on a 200mm extension, and only took a few minutes off and same on. The gasket flange is in one piece for both pipes which makes it easier. Don’t forget the bolt under the headers connecting to the engine cases. Some penetrating oil in advance would have made that one easier for me as it was part seized.

I also took off the right side skirt which gives you a bit more room to work.

I have just replaced my stator so have been through the process of right case removal twice; I did not put enough sealant on the stator grommet the first time.

Harbor Freight has a floor lift that won't break the bank and you will find other uses for it too.

Why not, as a senior you don't want to be crawling about on the garage floor, do you really need the hassle of building a wooden work stand, or the possibility of a 550 lb scooter toppling over onto you off it.

Or even buying one of these floor lifts or hydraulic work benches taking up space in your garage  I'd say most of us are now at an age where we've all accumulated too much junk and stuff we never use.

(My wife wants us to declutter our house with a view to moving in a couple of years, she's very good at it keeping our local charity shops supplied. Neither does she want have to deal with all my junk when I shuffle off my mortal coil.)

I vowed years ago that when I was able to afford having repairs and services done on my cars - I didn't have a motorbike then - I would.
It used to be fun as well as money-saving to do all our own work, often with parts garnered from car-breakers' yards, mostly, it seems, when there was ice on the ground but times have changed and tempus has fugited.

Sod the expense - keep the workers employed!

DITTO! I used to enjoy crawling under my vehicles and changing oil and greasing them all. Plus a few muffler changes etc. Now I just take my vehicles to the shop. We have a couple of good and trustworthy ones in town that I use.

Surely, there are not many things better than sitting back and letting someone else do the work!

Right on, although it seems that there's blokes on every maxi forum that buy maxi scooters just to tinker with them. The 'I do all my own work' types, and that's all they seem to do, they spend all year waiting for this bit and that part, or adding unnecessary stuff.

Then as winter nears and the riding season is over for another year, they're posting stuff about wishing they could be out riding.

Yes, letting someone else do all the heavy lifting and getting the dirt under their fingernails is definitely the way to go.

In Florida, we do our maintenance in the August Summer Heat. I am about to change my radiator hoses and drive belt. Always oil change and radiator flush.

I don't mind the odd bit of bike fettling, although I do know my limits.
Yesterday I removed that protective layer of road filth, and next week I will install a new layer. The manual doesn't tell me how often this should be done so do it annually or when I forget what colour the bike is.

Thanks for all of the advice. I agree Ill save the $$ on that harbor freight lift and schedule in to Honda dealer. I live in Columbus Ohio, We have one nearby and one about eighty miles from here in Troy who a lot of people trust. Now I have to put all the stuff back on. I also ordered all the gaskets and stuff from Babitts I will see if shop will use. Any idea how much this is going to cost.

I love working on the Swing, its a pleasure to attend to her for all the fun she has given me. Done the grommet fix myself and the worse part was getting the liquid gasket all over me and the bike and also putting the stator cover back on with the magnetic attraction helping to spread the gasket over and in the engine as you attempt to line up the cover with the case arghhhhh!

I take satisfaction that i know its been done properly, I dont trust anyone with my life on a motorcycle!

The worse job was easily the steering head bearing/races, now that really is a PITA lol

FWIW I used 3 ~6” pieces of M6 all-thread as guides to slide the stator cover back in place. No fighting that magnetic attraction.
