I suspect that SilverWing, although pretty good scooter, is at near end of model run.

BUT is what it is replaced by going to be better/cheaper/easier to work on/better air management? I doubt it. 50,000 mile belt/no adjust valves/decent air management is on my list along with easy remove wheels, spare.....lighter weight, etc, etc.

Won't happen on a high revving SOHC or DOHC design.
The oil flow to and from a hydraulic lifter just can't keep up with the the operating speed of the valve.
An alternative could be solid lifters with shims designed for a very long service life like Ford and Mazda use in some of their engines. The valves only need adjusting at something like 150k miles, and at the point the cam chain needs replacing as well. Not many drivers would put that kind of mileage on one bike.
If you must have hydraulic lifters, you're limited to slow revving V-twin designs in big cruisers.

Two wheeled motor racing have been using a pnumatic operating valve system for a while. For the reasons you state. It therefore figures that it will at some stage be introduced into the domestic two wheeled market.

Racing technologies eventually make their way into domestic products. I agree, Doug, eventually the camshaft, lifters, and ancillary hardware will go the way of the Dodo bird.

The exception is NASCAR.
EFI is finally replacing the carburetor next season. I wonder when NASCAR will adopt ABS, traction control, and stability control. Answer: never
That would take all the crashes out of that sport. Then nobody would watch anymore.

Want to add something on auto adjust valves---do work on high rpm in line 4's-----had 2 new CB750, NightHawks--the recent ones----rode the pee out of then, each were traded at about 50,000 no trouble miles on WalMart Oil----this is bike that should still be on US market. Can be done.....and I think my Kawasaki Voyager also auto adj valves---rode it 36,000 miles revving hard. Nice feature.
