PostSubject: Dr. Pulley sliders: to lube or not to lube   Wed Oct 05, 2011 10:24 am

After careful consideration I have come up with a recommendation for those removing the stock Honda rollers and installing any Dr. Pulley sliders:
It is not necessary or even beneficial to prelube them with any dry lubricant.

I base this on these facts, not myth or karma:

1) From the horse's mouth, the owner of UnionMaterial which manufactures all Dr. Pulley products, "no lubing is required or beneficial".
2) From Michael, the owner of BuggypartsNW, the US distributor of Dr. Pulley products, "no lubing is required or beneficial".
3) From my observations of the stock Honda rollers. They appear to be made of the same material as the Dr. Pulley sliders. They are not prelubed.
4) From my observations of what happens when you do prelube the sliders with a SMALL amount of powdered graphite. Even a small amount of any kind of lube will work its way out of the variator ramp plate, through and/or around the splined shaft, and onto the inside of the drive face. The lube will collect on that nice shiny machined surface of the inner drive face, where it is NOT supposed to be. The hard crud will affect the friction between the belt and drive face.

Conclusion: The rollers or sliders, whichever you install, will function perfectly without any lube. Why mess up your drive face and run the risk of belt slip or premature belt wear?
No more slider lubing for me.
