The object to be scanned must be disassembled and scanned separately. They neglected to show that in the crescent wrench example.

The idea is cool, but you can't just scan a Swing engine externally and expect all internal parts to be replicated and to function.

Unless they're using magnetic resonance imaging or side looking sonar, depth is impossible to determine with that star wars looking laser scanner.
