Mud Flap on front wheel

Going on a trip to Alaska this summer. I was thinking of putting a mud flap on the front fender to protect the radiator. Anyone know of a good looking one?

Function is what you should be looking for----I found Yamaha Riva mud flap in dealer's junk box-----worked on several bikes/scooters.

Easy installation----remove front fender for drilling-----Dennis Kirk also has small rubber mud flaps----one is on my Burgman right now.

The flaps should be wide and long enough to keep junk out of radiator. Probably should be standard equipment.

Reading this made me remember that the earliest SWings need to have the bolt checked often on the front fender. I think the first 2 years of the SWing they held it on with just a screw/bolt that could fall out. If that happens the back of the fender falls down and into the tire, and then causes the rider to go over the bars since it stops the front tire immediately.

But others have installed the flaps and liked them alot.

The mud flap is tucked so far under the front of the bike, most people won't notice if you have one, or not. IMHO, function is far more important than prettiness.

I used an empty moss killer container that was made of black plastic. It took very little effort to cut out a suitable mud flap from that.

I didn't drill my fender to mount it either. I used double-backed tape to mount it to the inside of the fender, then put a strip of black duct tape over the top portion of the place where it attaches to the inside of the fender.

I've got 11,000 miles on that mudflap so far, and had 48,000 on the mudflap mounted on my 07 400. You may think you need to mount it with bolts, etc. but you don't really need to. Nor do you need to spend a lot of money to get one that looks as good as the high priced ones.

I made mine in a similar way from a piece of black plastic cut from a flower pot, it's already pre-curved and was easily stuck onto the mud guard using double-sided adhesive pads. A smear of black silicone sealant around the edges makes an excellent waterproof seal.

Ahh now that's a good reason to head to the garden centre... Any idea of the diameter of the pot?

Just get the biggest one you can I used material left over from a stack of them I bought years ago, they were 10" or 12" allowing for the ridge at the top. Cut off the ridged bit at the top, cut off the circular base, and then cut the tubular bit in two.

Take the mud guard off, and do your measurements, and then use a piece of cardboard as a template. It's up to you the size you want it, and then place it over the plastic and draw it onto the plastic with a biro. You can use masking tape on the plastic to help outline your markings. Then it's easy to cut out the shape using a pair of scissors.

The most difficult bit is finding a garden centre still stocking black plastic flower pots, I couldn't find any new ones locally. I think a florists might even let you have one of those plastic buckets they put cut flowers in. Have fun!

Before cutting to the shape I wanted, the section of plastic I used for the Silver Wings mud flap was 7"H x 8¾''W so you could use a smaller pot. I just used a piece that was left over from my original stache, another section was previously used on a mud flap for my 650 Burgman.
