PostSubject: Tires   Tires I_icon_minitimeMon Aug 09, 2010 10:01 am

At 6,000 mile area----my OEM rear is starting to come apart at thread blocks. In one week, including 260 mile speedy round trip quite a difference was noticed.

I have had this trouble before---on Reflex, at least three rears, Bridgestone replaced all but with Bridgestone, so problem just repeated itself. Actually had one come apart , but retained air in Japan---problem partial at least--Honda had J speed rated tire on bike that could go 70 plus downhill with tailwind. In Japan I just went out and replaced with Dunlop.

Here our SilverWings, probably no great danger at 30-35 neighborhood speeds. But at 80-85 indicated on Freeway in 100 degree temps, I think hazard.

I will try to order matched of new today----not do anything with Bridgestone as they make some really crappy tires----just lived thru 3 plus years of Bridgestone OEM Run Flats on my BMW Coupe. Rode like lumber wagon. Car is bye bye---the $2000 replacement cost for tires means it got traded----the wife's new Honda CRV has Bridgestones---we already have had balance and runout problems.

So bottom line---Check your OEM Bridgestone rears.

Many people don't like what I say but I do the riding and have been for years.

Expanding: Honda only has the Bridgestone & IRC on the approved list. Metzeler does not have a matched set of tires on their list for Silverwing, something to think about. I have had good luck with IRC on BMW bike a few years ago.

I think this tire thing is serious business---your connection sometimes between life and death. Only takes one tire related high speed thrill to make believer of you---I had flat at 85 near Mankato MN returning from Sturgis in middle of night, on BMW K bike, I needed 2 lanes to get bike down to walking speed. No traffic at night----daytime could have been fatal. Went slower for quite awhile.

I wonder how much 'bad batches' has to do with it; I had a Michelin Gold Standard (rear) tyre delaminate explosively on my X9250 when I was travelling around 60MPH.
I won't bore you with the details but, suffice it to say, I was on a wide, recently resurfaced stretch of road and was able to coast gently to the kerb, protected from behind by the group I was leading at the time.
At that time, MGS tyres were the dog's.
It was replaced FOC because it had been identified as one of a bad batch.

Curiously, I had a Bridgestone Hoop as a (rear) replacement on my 500 and it was the best tyre I've ever had on a maxi.

I'm going to guess that this was intended to be a safety topic, so I moved it from the "Tips on Using This Site" topic area. John, if I've moved it in error, please let me know.

I know of no run flat tire for motorcycles.

A web search did not reveal very much in terms of motorcycle run flat tires.

At least a little info. http://editorial.autos.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=434851
