PostSubject: Driver's back rest   Sat Sep 11, 2010 1:46 am

Hi.

I would appreciate any info on:-

What after market replacement back rests are available for the Swing, where they can be sourced, at what cost.

Would also like to get some feedback from those who have replaced standard butt rest.

here is a suggestion, lol, just received mine today and it is a piece of crap. do not order your backrest mod kit from these folks. bestbackrests.com

their kit is a joke. the holes in both brackets are not even drilled alike, i had to file the holes to make it work. also they want your feedback but give you no number in which to call them personally, only accept e-mails, now i know why. after an hour of modifying their holes the wife got home and we tried it out, to my dimay the stock backrest does not work well being lifted up, it is too wide and the "molded in backcurve" is in the sitting room of the passenger. she cannot get off the seat safely so i am back to the stock buttrest. i'm going to try and make a backrest to fit the mod kit i got from bestbackrests.com that will fit my back better and leave room for the passenger. hope noone in the forum makes my mistake again. hope this post helps.

sorry about that folks, i forgot the important stuff. the price was 49.95 and shipping was 15.00 making the total price for nothing a whopping 64.95. sometimes i need to kick myself in the buttrest for making such dumb mistakes as this purchase. again, i hope this keeps someone from making the same mistake as i did.

I have one from Motor Mate---about $70 as I recall----easy install---changed inch bolts it came with to metric.

Fairly useless---used it for a week took off, am going to try again next week and it does not do what I require----it goes to junk box.

I have tried Utopia on several scooters----they are so heavy, screws up seat struts, didn't matter on Helix as seat is held on by 6mm bolt. Got rid of on ebay.

Even though I have tried this stuff-----safest way to control/bike is in attack mode, lots of weight carried by legs/feet. I see the fat guy, drink holder (big mama won't fit on back with most back rests), highway pegs, wired for sound, leaning back and wonder what he will do in emergency situation. Don't want him around me on the road.

The Utopia backrest is solidly built and heavy duty.

Here is a stronger inexpensive strut replacement, which I have not had any problems with.

I should try to find a heavier-duty strut over here but I made a prop out of aluminium tubing and shock-cord.
I put it between the rear seat-catch and front of the topbox.
It's not idea but does the job.

I could ship overseas (if legal), if it would help.

mitch,

Check out the Three brothers buttrest extension that converts your butt rest to a back rest. It has worked well for me with the mods that I have made for it. I chose to mod it so that my passenger would have more room and to make it fit my back exactly the way I want it. It has worked out perfect for me and no cutting to the seat was necessary. All the holes in the extension line up well to the buttrest so their should be no problem with it.
You can see everything I did below.

I may take you upon that.
I've got my Brittany Trip coming up but when I get back I'll send you a PM and sort something out. cheers

I think mine is a Utopia also. It is made in Ohio and they make them when you order it. It really has helped my back on the long rides. It has a little removeable bag on the back that I keep my map and mileage book.

To determine if Utopia. Open the seat and look on the underside of the seat ... the Utopia backrest will have a a visible metal bar.

When I talked to the Utopia support, they told me the metal bars are use to strengthen the plastic seat pan which was flexed too much ... which is why the Utopias can support 350+ lbs on the backrest.

Yes, mine has the little bag.
One of the good things about the Utopia is that it adjusts up and down and forwards and back....and the back-pad tilts to accommodate the rider's posture (I slouch!).
