PostSubject: Givi AF214 Fitting Issues   Fri Aug 27, 2010 11:19 am

Hi All,

Thought I would update you on my Givi AF214 installation.

I am a little disappointed with how the installation is going.

First, the windscreen did not fit well over the 6 mounting holes. I had to spread the shield slightly to align the holes.

Second, the left side of the screen extends approximatly 1/2 inch more forward than the right side. I tried for a few hours trying to align this, but nothing seems to work. See pictures.

Also, just an FYI, according to Givi, the bottom holes, you must remove the rubber grommet and insert it into Givi windscreen. I do not recall reading or seeing anything about this.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Well, I decided I will not be using the AF214 windscreen.

I remove it this evening.

Interesting, when installing the windscreen, it had to be compressed on the sides for the 6 holes to align on the right and left hand sides. Well, this caused too much stress on the top 2 holes, and actually cracked the upper mounts. And I did use the metal brackets.

Needless to say, I was not happy at all. I contacted Givi and waiting for a response.

Will keep you all posted.

See attached pictures.

PostSubject: Re: Givi AF214 Fitting Issues   Mon Sep 27, 2010 12:24 pm

I recently fitted this screen to my 2010 Silverwing 600. At first I could see no use for the two stainless brackets, thinking I had a later bike, I fitted the screen without them. This worked, but the rubber mounts allowed the screen to flex a little. I re-visited the rather poor pictures sent with the screen, and the penny dropped !
I removed the screen, fitted the brackets, drilling only one hole each side to connect with the thread in the upper frame, and then refitted the screen.
Suprise ! the screen is much more solid, still using the three rubber mounts each side. I put this down to the friction generated by the screen abutting the stainless bracket. Hope this helps.

I fitted my Givi AF 214 screen (Including the two metal brackets) today and the forum tutorial helped a great deal.

Everything came off and went back OK but just one question re metal plates.

Each plate comes with two bolts from Givi - One for the end of the plate (Nearest to handlebars) where a hole has to be cut in the plastic to access a predrilled securing point and one in the middle of the plate that replaces a large shiny bolt which fits into fairing and has a collar type spacer / washer.

I kept the two spacer washers out am just wondering if these spacer / collar type washers should in fact have remained in place behind the middle hole of each plate.

Rather than strip it all down again to find out can someone please let me know.

Thanks

I found that leaving out the spacers distorted the plates, so I left them in, also I prefered the original bolts to the Give ones, they had a better head, which I felt spread the load better.

Thanks for your prompt reply Silver Surfer

When I was installing the plates I too noticed that the plates were distorting in the middle as the pressure on the plates, which rest on the flanges of two of the tunnel bolts, built up when tightening the plate fitting bolts.

It was not until after full installation that I started to wonder if I should in fact have left the collar / spacers in place especially as I thought that they may also perform some other function as well.

Anyway having read your reply I have now stripped the AF214 back off of the bike, loosened up the two plates and reinserted the two collar / spacers.

The plates now fit flush without the distortion in the middle as the washer now takes up the space.

I am now satisfied with the install.

I think mention should be made in the Givi instructions about these collar washers.

Givi instructions have been horrible ... and continue to be horrible.

Glad your sorted Mitch. I think ( from memory ) that the collared washers transfer the load to the metal frame beneath the plastic, without it the plastic distorts, hence the bent plates. I have to say that it was the pictures in the instructions which gave me most trouble, a simple diagram would have been better. We live and learn !

Hello to you all ... if you install this Givi AF214 on your silverwing make sure to clip properly ... I don `t have done and the top part of the windshield was ejected by the Wind...just pass close to receive the piece in the face...

While tend to agree that the instructions for these could be better, downloading the PDF and blowing them up really does help.

Givi seem to be high on price and customer ergonomics seem to take a rather poorer back seat.

I was a little taken aback that fitting the screen requires the drilling of four new holes.

How four holes?

I fitted mine about a week ago and only had to drill two!!!! Looking from the front it was for the last hole on the enclosed bracket.

Have I missed something! I used the sheet Givi attached and the guide from this web site.

Worried now! pale

Two holes - one on each side/one for each bracket.

When you've got the old screen off, offer up the brackets, one at a time, and gently drill through the hole in the bracket (using the bracket as a guide as to where to drill).

Bigbird wrote:

Wendell, don't give up. You will have to remove the large shiny bolt with stepped washer that attaches to the steel frame. That's one of the mounting points for the bracket. Do not re-use that big shiny bolt. You will use the round head GIVI bolt in that location. The other holes will align properly with the existing Honda mounting holes for the windshield. There is only 1 hole you will drill. With the bracket correctly aligned, you will see the bent part of the bracket is now towards the rear of the bike, and is angled inwards 45 degrees towards the the centre of the bike. You will drill through that angled hole. Behind that hole is a boss which holds the threads for the other GIVI bolt. That bolt is the socket head bolt as opposed to the pan head bolt.
Try again. As they say in the movie "The Waterboy", you can do it!

If you type 'AF214' in the Search box and tick 'posts' you'll see this and a few other posts.

And this thread has loads of help and suggestions:
