Being chased by dogs

I have neighbors whose dogs have nearly caused me to crash. I try and avoid going past their house, but sometimes forget, and there are the dogs. I've tried talking to her, but she doesn't care. So, it's time to get a go pro to record it, and file a complaint. I might prevent someone else getting hurt as well as myself. Who has experience with a gopro, and mounting it to their bike?

BJS193, one of the techniques David Hough outlines in his book(s), Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well, is to slow down your approach when the dog starts barking and charging you. The dog has calculated the point of intercepting you based on his speed and your speed.

Then, at the appropriate time when the dog is close to intercepting you (say around 15 feet away), you speed up thus throwing the dog's calculations ... and his "intercept point" out of whack. I've used this technique a number of times and it works.

Filing a complaint with your local constabulary is also a good idea ... especially if they have a motorcycled officer who can ride up the same street and experience the same aggressive dog doing the same to them. Or simply have a friend park nearby and record the event on a smart phone as you ride by and then present your evidence.

Alternatively, if you can, arrange to have a Police Officer park on the street when you ride past the house and witness the charging dog for themselves. IMO, there should be no need to have to go through the expense of buying a GoPro. unless you want one.

What sonuvabug said, I taught that back when I was rider ed. The electronic deterrents are just another gimmick like deer whistles just another farkle.

Your "over here" is simply not relevant "over here". Our local motorcycle LEO's would absolutely ride up a street to check out an aggressive dog threatening public safety. Over here, they truly "Serve and Protect".

A constant theme within your posts is how you find it incomprehensible to understand your POV is not the only one that exists or matters. Be aware there is a huge, diverse universe filled with positive, joyful people beyond your myopic walled city.

Thanks, and that procedure absolutely works. That is, if I remember they're there, and have time and presence of mind to respond appropriately. My point is; I shouldn't have to worry about it since she's been made aware of the fact her dogs are endangering riders. I want to protect others, as well as myself if I can.

Dogs is the main reason I quit riding bicycles. Living in the country people just figure "let the dogs run free".  I use the method detailed above when on the scooter.

I go out almost every day on my push bike and use a lot of cycle lanes that run alongside pavements/sidewalks. There's always almost locals walking their dogs on the pavement alongside and the the dogs are kept on a leash. 

I occasionally spot a dog owner letting their dog walk in the cycle lane a retractable dog leash, and when aware of my presence they'll reel the dog back in beside them. I do my bit for cyclist and dog walkers relations by giving the pair a wide a berth as possible when I ride past.

I live in a very nice trailer park community here in Tucson, but there is a house just up from mine that has a black lab on a leash with a muzzle which if I am riding my bicycle or Swing and say a greeting the dog tries to charge at me. These same owners walk past my house revealing two pistols on him and her carrying a sidearm . There is definitely something wrong with this couple. Now I ride by and just wave instead of saying anything. People have a right not to fear hostile dogs out in public . There are ways to deal with them and their owners.

What’s your worst fear, getting mauled by the dog or getting shot by the owner(s) for defending yourself while being mauled?

I’d suggest using bear pepper spray aimed at those lil boogers when they charge. Bet the farm after a hit of that they’ll think twice. Suction mount action cam apparatus should work for video acquisition. Look for a flat surface (cleaned with alcohol) and mount. Twist and Shout fellow scootians!

In contrast, yesterday I had to gently ring the big black and white polka dot bell on my Dutch push bike to remind two ladies in front of me with Yorkshire Terriers to reel their dog leashes in.
