PostSubject: New belt, time for new pulleys?   New belt, time for new pulleys? I_icon_minitimeMon Jul 18, 2016 5:26 pm

Hey gang,

It's time for me to replace my belt, the previous owner installed the Dr Pulleys on the bike. I thought I read somewhere that someone said when you replace the belt, replace the pulleys too? I know it doesnt "have to be done", but I cant seem to find that comment or thread.

Any input would be appreciated, ride on and stay safe!

How many miles? more than likely just a good surface clean up would do the job. One area you might look at cleaning with light 800 grit sanding are the clutch faces and drum.

I have 70 k kl with my Dr pulley 24 grams sliders and with the new belt just installed at 100 klph , 4600 rpm .at 5 k rpm ,110 +, klph . If you are not these numbers , if you have groves on the drive face plate change it.

The pulleys should outlast several belts.

PostSubject: Re: New belt, time for new pulleys?   New belt, time for new pulleys? I_icon_minitimeMon Jul 18, 2016 8:39 pm

I bought the bike with 13,000 on it, im at 19,500 in the 9 months Ive had it. I know he installed the pulleys but have no clue about the belt.

Just in the past 2 weeks, when I get up over 60mph, the belt light comes on. I reset it, it comes back on. I dont know if my mind if playing tricks, but I think maybe the belt has slipped once or twice, not a big slip with a high engine rev, nothing unsafe, etc, just a slight feeling Im thinking, its only happened twice.

I wanted to replace the belt and clean up the clutch and so forth, just to have a fresh start not knowing what the previous owner did with the belt.

Thoughts now? Thanks again for taking the time for your input, I appreciate you dudes.

My fist belt and face plate pulley lasted 30k kl belt was under 27 mm and a deep grove on the face plate changing the rpm and light up the V light when hard acceleration .Now 70 k kl later there is no grove on the face plate, and on my 3rd belt replacement at a cost of $150.00 per belt . My friend blew the belt on his burgy 650 at a cost of $700.00 for the belt and still waiting for his scooter sitting at the dealer for the last 3 weeks. At least I can replace my belts without the help of a dealer. His cost will likely be over $ 1600.00.He has 72 k kl on his burgman.

Gustafa, just change the Belt. Dr Pulley sliders will last,as, someone has said, several belt changes. The original Rollers last about 23-24,000mls. Smile

If you don't want to mess about with the clutch, and I never have, one solution is hold bike upright with engine running both brakes on, run up to 3-4 thousand revs for 3-4 seconds, this deglazes the clutch. I never touched the clutch on my first Silver wing that I did 40,000mls on. I have 18,000mls on my present Silver wing and fitted a new belt and Dr Pulley sliders last month at 16000mls. The deglazing is to be done once a year.

Gentlemen something here confuses me, maybe I confuse easy but how does slipping the S'Wing clutch remove the " glaze " and not glaze it at the same time? I still drive things with standard shift with a clutch and know slipping the clutch glazes surfaces and glazing them eventually causing slipping and failure. Smile going back and remembering driver education classes and the instructor saying don't slip the clutch just ease it out quickly in one smooth motion.

Dunno OWG, Maybe it's the difference between a centrifical clutch and a pressure plate type clutch. Anyway, I've always pulled the Driven Pulley on my S'Wing(s) and use emery cloth on the clutch bell and clutch shoes. It works for me, YMMV.

Tim

UPDATE: To answer Gustafa's question (below): If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Gustafa, you asked for advice I and others have given it, it is not rocket science, take the advice or not, it's up to you.

Old Limey, my question wasnt a sarcastic retort to your advice.

I am stating I simply haven't seen others say anything about the deglazing, not that its not an invalid suggestion.
I was hoping a few would say "yea, we do it all the time, etc". Thats all.

Thanks for taking the time to tell me about it, I had never heard of it and I do appreciate it.

I always used the procedure to hold the brake and rev up the engine to 4,000 rpm's for about 4 seconds or so. You know you need to do this when your SWing will "shudder" a bit when taking off. Another way to avoid the 'shutter' is to take off a bit faster and not do the really slow take-offs. But this procedure has been around for at least 10 years or so.

I have a "Pictorial" here on how to change the belt in the maintenance section. I was also on the silverwing.org site and the pictorial there is probably mine as well.

Hi my problem is with a new gates belt I can't decipher the dater on the belt , no obvious arrows , just a little picture of a scooter repeated , should I install belt following the picture , or should I wait until some one has the right information ? no use contacting Gates USA as as far as I see from their website they don't do scooters in USA.

While I've never seen a Gates belt, with a traditional scooter, and in the absense of directional arrows, the belt is installed so that the printing on the belt can be read as you face the variator assembly as you are working on it. So in your case I guess you'd want to see those scooter images with the front wheel facing the direction of rotation, i.e. front of the image facing the front of your scooter. My 2ยข

As I have just posted on another topic regarding the Gates belt. No directional markings on the belt, just fit. I have fitted three gates belts and never had any problems.
