PostSubject: Belt Slap gone   Mon Nov 02, 2009 5:37 pm

Today i replaced my rollers with 28 gr. sliders.

I noticed that the sleeve that the front variator slides on was a little sticky (didn't move smoothly). There was no lubrication on it and some sticky stuff in there.
Since it has a seal on the face side I presumed that some kind of lubricant was intended to be in there between the sleeve and the back variator bushing. I put a very thin coating of NLGI #1 grease on the bushing after thoroughly cleaning the sleeve and bushing.

After reassembly it moved through the range easily.
On a 40 mile test run, I noticed a secondary benefit that the belt no longer slapped...

Good for me.

If you have some belt slap, try lubing the front variator sleeve and bushing. Helped me. (don't overdo it on the grease)

MaxB (happy with no more belt slap)

P.S. I presume that the bronzelike bushing is prelubricated (oil impregnated) similar to the on on the reflex. But this helps galling and sticking.

Interesting, I wonder how Moly Paste would work. Honda's service manual on the Goldwings calls for moly paste (60% moly) for lubricating drive line splines. The main reason for the stuff is that the moly's lubricating qualities are still present after the grease carrier is long gone. GW's had some problems with wearing splines in the drivelines until the advent of moly paste for a lubricant. Since then, pretty much no more wear. Might be worth trying on the variator. I'll give it a try when I pull mine down later this winter.

I think that the thicker Paste would hinder easy movement of pulley caused by the rollers. Thinner would be better in my opinion.

Try it if too slow of movement by hand you can wipe it out and try different, thinner lube before reinstall on the scoot.

Remember you are talking about a very thin coating.
