PostSubject: Old rider/new to scooters   Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:01 am

I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks and this seems like a good forum. I bought a used 2007 (pre-dropped), and then it rained and we had a record snowfall. I've been riding street bikes for years, but I really like what I've experienced with the silverwing so far. Maybe I can sneak it out for a ride today, without the weather gods catching me.

Hello and welcome!
The Silverwing is a lovely bike in all weathers as long as there's a bit of grip.

[i]Welcome to the scooter world. It has been my experience (40 years of scootering) that scooter folks are more laid back than our bike counter-parts. We might be as passionate, but it seems to be mixed with a higher dose of common-sense.
Could the real difference be that we do not need a truck with spare parts following for the "when it breaks down" event? (He said with tongue in cheek.)
OK, it is time for my "a few times a year" preach to the choir event.
People who ride are not a part of the problem, we are the solution! Look at the majority of industrialized nations, do they ride as a majority, yes. Do they ride Harley-likes, no. They ride scooters, they ride Swing-like scooters, they ride 49cc scooters, they ride to work in their suits, (with proper gear) they ride double, they just ride, ride, ride.
And, what is my point? They fear not for their lives because they "might have a wreck". They will have a wreck, if they ride long enough. The difference is they are unaffected by the Brando-effect: I really feel that the movie still haunts the underlying thought process of the 4-wheelers who do not ride, at all. There is a distrust/dislike that is mixed with envy, when 4-wheeler drivers see us.
And, by the way, you really do "meet the nicest people on a Honda"....if you do not recognize that sentence, just Google the words, and see what you get.

Welcome Yo.... or can I call you by your first name Hi...?
This is a very friendly forum. Lots of technical help along with advice from experienced riders of all levels of riding history.
IF you have any questions, ask away. There will be someone to help you out. You will feel like a part of the family very quickly.
Being from Texas you will find more riders like yourself that you can meet up with for rides.
Thats what we do... ride. Mostly for pleasure but some ride out of necessity . I have found it hard to seperate the two.
Welcome again.

Welcome from across the pond, enjoy the Silverwing, for a moped it's not too bad Rolling Eyes (thats what bikers over here refer to it as). The shock comes when you overtake them on ya moped!!!!!!

I just love my 'Wing'.

There are some serious 'wing' wizards on here, nay question and I mean any, I bet someone on here can help.

Great forum, join in and enjoy.

Doug

Well, the weather gods blessed me with a beautiful day today and I took advantage of it. Thanks for all the welcoming comments. As to my name, I think all of us can remember (if we can remember anyhing) the next two words after "hi yo".

Hi Yo,

Welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy it. If you haven't already posted a pic or 2, please go to the "Album" section and create your own folder and post some. Also post some pics of your rides you do too. And like others have said...if you have any questions please ask away. You might also want to review the "Pictorial" section in case you need to do any maintenance. Welcome.

Hi Yo,

Welcome to the forum, glad you can get some riding in. What makes/models of street bikes did you ride in the past?

I started on a CB350 Honda. Learned to ride in the apartment parking lot with the little kids laughing at my braking techniques. Since then I've ridden a Yamaha 650, Riverside 350 (a single thumper made by Benelli for Monkey Ward), several other 350 Hondas, a CB750 Honda, an old Goldwing GL1100, a Honda Shadow 1100, a Victory, a Kawasaki Klr650, and assorted other bikes I've probably forgotten. Oh yeah, a friends scooter with "fly by wire technology". A piece of baling wire hooked to the carb and the front frame because the throttle cable was broken. You accelerated by pushing out on the wire with your leg. We were in the country with dirt roads and never heard of helmets. It's a wonder any of us made it out of childhood alive, but we sure had fun.

Monkey Wards, now there is a term I haven't heard in a long time!
Guess that means we're getting old. At least in body, not in mind.

Wes

P.S. Welcome to the group!
